This volume covers  the early period in the history of South African Railways which began when a small 0-4-2 well tank was brought over from England in 1859.  Road and works numbers of engines are given throughout, together with technical details. The text is supported by numerous photographs and line drawings.

The dust wrapper is in vg condition, bright, with slight fading to the spine and with scuffs to the extremities and side of the spine, with a .5 cm closed tear to the head of the spine to the rear.
The binding is secure and tight.
The page edges are yellowing.
Internally , the content is clean and in vg condition.
